ZVEX Lo Fi Loop Junky Review

Posted on October 14, 2011October 29, 2022 by Peter
ZVEX Lo-Fi Loop Junky

Summary

• Pros: The Lo Fi Loop Junky adds awesome analog artifacts to your sound such as hiss, moan, distortion and other oddities.
• Cons: Records only one loop with no sound-on-sound, layers or overdubbing.
• Overall: A specialty looper pedal that delivers awesome, weird sounds for the pedal junky looking for just that. It’s not for standard looping, however.

ZVEX Lo Fi Loop Junky Review

The ZVEX Lo-Fi Loop Junky is the antithesis to the modern digital looper pedal. It’s all analog, without analog-to-digital conversion of any kind. It samples for only 20 seconds. Plus, everything you record into it will sound totally different coming out the other end. But, what’s really cool is that it features hiss, noise, distortion, and other analog artifacts to add character to your guitar tone. It’s even capable of making your little guitar loop sound like an old, scratched, warped record!

Despite the artifacts that come through the looper, the pedal does feature a transparent guitar preamp to preserve your direct tone. It also features a velvety, smooth compression for nice organ-esque tones. Furthermore, it has a built-in Vibrato with Speed and Depth control knobs. This allows you to make warped record sounds or for imparting a chorused, Leslie rotating-speaker-style tone to your loops.

There is also a tone knob to roll off any unwanted hiss or to add warmth to your loop. Because this pedal has a very limited frequency response (nothing above 2.6Khz), however, too much treble shouldn’t be a problem.

Handy LED Status Indicator

The Loop Junky has a simple LED status indicator that lights up solid while recording. It blinks once at the end of every loop, and stops completely in bypass mode. In the interest of tone preservation the Loop Junky does feature True Bypass switching just like all other ZVex pedals.

Overall, it’s super simple to operate. It has five obvious knob controls, an on/off stomp switch, and a record stomp switch. It also has a tiny save switch in the upper right-hand corner to save your loops, even when the battery is unplugged!

Personal Touch

Making it truly unique, the pedal is handmade and hand-painted in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It’s also warranted to be free from manufacturing defects for as long as Zachary Vex is on earth! A super cool pedal for the looping aficionado!
