Limitations of Using a Looper Pedal

Limitations of Using a Looper Pedal

While I’ve written extensively about the benefits of using a guitar looper pedal to improve your playing, a word should certainly be added about the limitations of a guitar looper pedal. A looper pedal can certainly get you playing with backing tracks and over your own rhythm sections to help you understand timing, but it’s not the same thing as playing with another human being. As an example of what I’m talking about, take a look at this video of Larry Carlton playing with Robben Ford:

Notice how the two make eye contact every so often as if they are making little agreements throughout the song as to who will play the next part, when a change is coming, or even just to express satisfaction or excitement with the way the song is going. This is really what making music is all about – communicating on another level with other people! So, while practicing with a looper pedal should be part of the daily diet, remember why you started playing guitar, get out of your bedroom, and start jamming with your friends. That’s all for today, folks!
